About us

The origin of the Malani River, called Malini in ancient times, is believed to be from the Chanda hills of Pauri district. This river originating from the mountains of Uttarakhand and joins Ganga ji. Kanwashram is situated on the holy banks of this Malini River, which is a wonderful heritage of sage Kanva! There are many historical features of this land. There was an ashram of sage Vishwamitra in the foothills of the Himalayas. In this ashram, Shakuntala grew up in connection with the animals and birds of the forest. King Dushyant and Shakuntala of Hastinapur got the son Ratna here. Which was named Bharat.

Bharat was raised in Kanwashram situated on the banks of the Malini River. Later, India was also named after Emperor Bharat. The books of many history written on India begins with this hymn-North Yatsamudrasya Himadrashava Dakshinam. Year and Bharat Name Bharati Yatra Santha: That is, the year, the country which is in the north of the sea and the south of the Himalayas, is India where the descendants of Bharata reside.

Kanwashram is also mentioned in Mahabharata and Skanda Purana. In the Mahabharata, it has been called the birthplace of Bharata. In the Skanda Purana, it has been called a divine pilgrimage site and Mahakavi Kalidas ji has given immortality to Kanvashram in his music drama ‘Abhigyan Shakuntalam.

Kanwashram, located on the banks of the Malini River and in the Shivalik mountain range of the Himalayas, had a major university in ancient times where thousands of students used to come to earn learning from Kanva Rishi and his disciples sages.
